Load indexes and speed
Load indexes
The load index is a numerical code which indicates the maximum load a tyre can bear. To find out your load index, simply note down the information which appears on the side of one your tyres and compare it with the table of weight indexes.
It is illegal to mount a load index which is lower than that of the tyres which were originally mounted on the vehicle or which is lower than the index recommended by the manufacturer. On the other hand, it is possible to mount a load index which is higher.
The speed index
The speed index is an alphabetical code which indicates the maximum speed for which a tyre is designed. To find out your speed index, simply note down the information which appears on the side of one your tyres and compare it with the table of speed indexes.
It is illegal to mount a speed index which is lower than that of the tyres which were originally mounted on the vehicle or which is lower than the index recommended by the manufacturer. On the other hand, it is possible to mount a speed index which is higher.
Manufacturers apply these speed indexes for tyres in good condition.

The speed indexes were defined for enclosed speedways. Depending on the different speed indexes, tyres warm up less and lose shape less and are more efficient at higher speeds. NB: even though the tyres you mount have capacities which are well over speed limits, no manufacturer recommends the use of tyres at unauthorised speeds.
